The Search Engines

The internet search engines are the leading source of obtaining website visitors. The majority of internet users start at an internet search engine when looking for information such as products and services. Therefore, to market your website effectively you need to have your website rank highly in the search engine results pages (SERP's for short) for your keyword phrases. There are two primary ways of accomplishing this: Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and Search Engine Marketing (SEM). There are many search engines on the internet but there are primarily three leaders: Google, Yahoo! and MSN. When using an internet search engine to do a keyword search, the search engine result pages are comprised of two types of website listings: paid listings (also called sponsored listings) and natural listings (also called organic listings).

Paid listings are usually the first 2-3 listings that are highlighted as sponsored websites and also the shorter listings in the right hand column. The natural listings are the majority of the websites listed after the first few sponsored results. Optimizing your website for top rankings with the natural listings is called Search Engine Optimization or SEO, where as paying the search engines for top sponsored listings is a form of Search Engine Marketing or SEM.
